We are very blessed at All Saints to be the custodians of very a fine rood screen dating from the end of the fifteenth century. The base of the screen, the dado, in common with many Norfolk screens is decorated with contemporary painted figures of the saints, in this case of the twelve Apostles. Each figure is set against a red or green coloured ground decorated with stencilled gold flowers. Each figure holds an object associated with them, in many cases the weapon used in their martyrdom. From left to the right the figures are:
St Simon, holding a saw with which he was martyred. St Matthew, holding a sword with which he was martyred. St James the Less, a fuller's club with which he martyred. St Jude, a ship. St James the Great, dressed as a pilgrim to his own shrine at Compestala. St Andrew, a saltire cross on which he was martyred. St Peter, holding the keys of heaven. St John, with the chalice and viper. St Bartholomew, flaying knife with which he was skinned alive. St Matthias, holding a falchion with which he was martyred. St Philip, loaves. St Thomas, spear with which he was martyred.
Below you will find a slide show of photos of the screen paintings.
